Cost of moving to Dubai: a family budget checklist

Will your finances still work if school, transport or housing costs more than expected? Build a first-year budget around when your family must actually pay, rather than a generic “cost of living” figure.

Start with the costs you cannot avoid

List the people moving and what an ordinary week requires: housing, utilities, connectivity, groceries, travel to work and school, healthcare and education. Give each item a range and note where the number came from—a specific home, a school fee schedule or just an assumption. The uncertain numbers become the questions to check next.

Check the cash gap before you settle in

A manageable monthly budget can still fail when several bills arrive together. Put flights, temporary accommodation, deposits, paperwork, school payments and setting up a home on a timeline. A refundable deposit still uses cash now; keep it out of your available reserve until it is returned.

Example: how much cash remains after the move

Imagine a family has AED 100,000 in available cash. In this illustration, they pay AED 30,000 towards housing, AED 5,000 as a deposit, AED 10,000 for temporary accommodation, AED 15,000 to the school and AED 5,000 for paperwork and setting up home. That leaves AED 35,000. If their regular spending is AED 10,000 per month, the balance covers about three and a half months without new income. These are illustrative figures, not Dubai market prices: substitute the terms offered by your home, school and service providers. If income is delayed for four months, this calculation reveals the gap before you sign.

Test one uncomfortable scenario

Start with your preferred plan, then change two assumptions: the chosen school has no place, and the work journey requires a car or taxis. Recalculate the annual total and the cash reserve for the months before income stabilises. If the reserve disappears, reconsider the area, use temporary housing or change the moving date before signing a contract.

Replace guesses with actual offers

When a school confirms a place and fees, and a home comes with actual terms, replace estimates. Keep annual amounts, due dates and refundable deposits in separate columns. The useful question is: which payments can your family make on time, and how much cash remains afterwards? That is a concrete budget we can use together when comparing areas and homes.
